Toading about

Oh, and my passion for etymology leads to interesting results…

I was reading about the Portuguese word for toad, sapo, and found out its exact origin is unknown, but it’s believed to be a word of pre-Roman origin, probably from an original Iberian language. I didn’t expect that.

It’s also sapo in Galician and Spanish, but, once you go east and cross to Catalan and French, it changes to gripau and crapaud, respectively. And it seems the Basque word is apo.

Curiously, it seems the very origins of gripau, crapaud, and even ‘toad’ itself, are also disputed.

What a curious animal!

Conjugar, conjugar e conjugar, eis a resposta!

I need to start conjugation Bulgarian verbs. Just that. Even if I dedicate myself to other types of exercises from my books, conjugation verbs in a pure, straightforward way is probably the best way for me to actually learn them by heart, hoping it’ll eventually become second nature. I used to do that with Catalan and German, and any free time will do, so I must start doing it with Bulgarian, too (just making sure to recheck the patterns, so I won’t get any of them wrong and then have problems unlearning them later).

  • правя, правиш, прави, правим, правите, правят;
  • пия, пиеш, пие, пием, пиете, пият;
  • etc.

Since the present tense poses no serious difficulties right now (other than me getting the wrong conjugation when it’s not obvious enough), I wonder if I should try and tackle it with the aorist at the same time or not…
